GetShopSync vs Akeneo

These two products are not really in the same market, and the most useful thing this page can do is say so plainly and then tell you which side of the line you are on.

The short answer

Akeneo is an enterprise product experience management platform starting from roughly USD 45 000 a year in licence, with implementation commonly adding R250 000 or more. GetShopSync starts at R2 500 a month. For most South African mid-market distributors Akeneo disqualifies itself on price before a feature comparison begins — but if you have multiple languages, multiple channels and a governance requirement, Akeneo does things GetShopSync does not attempt.

Where Akeneo wins

  • It is an enterprise platform, and GetShopSync is not

Multi-language, multi-channel syndication, deep governance, workflow, SSO, and security certifications a procurement team will ask for. If your requirements list contains those words, GetShopSync fails the requirements list and Akeneo does not.

  • A mature ecosystem

Roughly 4.7 out of 5 across 39 Capterra reviews and about 4.4 across 232 on G2, plus a global partner network and a large integration catalogue. GetShopSync has none of that.

  • It will still be there in ten years

Akeneo is an established category leader. GetShopSync is a new product from a small South African company. That is a real risk difference and it belongs in your decision.

Where GetShopSync wins

  • Roughly a fourteenth of the price

GetShopSync Growth is R5 400 a month. Akeneo Growth Edition is around R62 600 a month in licence alone, before an implementation that commonly runs past R250 000.

  • It acquires the data

Akeneo assumes your product data exists and needs modelling. For a distributor sourcing from many manufacturers it usually does not exist yet. GetShopSync captures it from supplier pages; Akeneo has no equivalent.

  • Live in days, without a partner

The most repeated complaint about Akeneo in public reviews is that setup is complex and needs an implementation partner, and that onboarding suffers when the partner does not know the product well. GetShopSync is designed to have one supplier range on the storefront inside thirty days.

  • Priced and supported in South Africa

Rand pricing, a local entity to contract with, same-timezone support, and POPIA answered directly.

The question that decides it

If you sell in several languages through several channels and have a procurement process that requires certifications, buy Akeneo and budget properly for the implementation. If you are a South African distributor with a Shopify store, a few thousand SKUs, and a person retyping supplier data, Akeneo is an expensive answer to a question you are not asking.

Common questions

How much does Akeneo cost?
Akeneo does not publish pricing on its own site and asks buyers to request a quote. Third-party sources put the Growth Edition from about USD 45 000 a year in licence, with first-year totals including implementation commonly in the EUR 80 000 to 150 000 range. Treat those as indicative rather than quoted.
Is Akeneo worth it for a mid-market distributor?
Usually not, on price alone. At roughly R62 600 a month in licence before implementation, it is about fourteen times GetShopSync Growth. It becomes worth considering when you genuinely need multi-language catalogues, multi-channel syndication and enterprise governance.
Does Akeneo capture product data from supplier websites?
No. Akeneo is a product experience management platform — it models, governs and distributes product data you already hold. Acquiring that data from supplier sites is outside its scope.
